A high temperature is quite common in young children. The temperature usually returns to normal within 3 to 4 days. Many things can cause a high temperature in children, from common childhood illnesses like chickenpox and tonsillitis, or infections, which children can be prone to.
Worst case scenario, as parents, our greatest concern for high fever is seizures to cause brain damage in our child. Brain damage from a fever is thankfully rare generally and will not occur unless the fever is over 42°C. Untreated fevers caused by common infections like ear infections will seldom go over 40.6°C unless the child is overdressed or in a hot place. Febrile seizures do occur in some children.
When my son had his first fever, he was 9 months old. He had a few mild seizure episodes and we admitted him to the ER at a local medical centre. The doctor in the ER immediately gave him Acetaminophen suppositories to reduce his fever. But his fever returned after a few hours. I decided to use natural remedies to help his body recover naturally and to also allow his body’s immunity to develop naturally. It took about 10 days for his fever to completely recover using all the natural remedies. But what amazed me was that his 2nd fever only lasted for 3 to 4 days without any medication from doctor. And he has never needed any medication for any fever since then.
The Dos when your child is having a fever:
Give them plenty of fluids
My recommendations:
- Barley water – boil the organic barley for 15 to 20 minutes. Give your child this barley water throughout the day.
- Wheatgrass powder – add quarter to half teaspoon of organic wheatgrass powder into puree of water, given twice a day.
- Probiotic – give probiotic every 2 hours until the fever is stabilized.
- To hydrate your baby, soak organic fenugreek seed in warm water and drink throughout the day.
- Add half to one teaspoon of organic first cold pressed virgin coconut oil to baby food. Coconut oil is effective in building a stronger immune system.
- Give them food only when they want: millet porridge or organic baby cereal.
- Check your child’s temperature every 30 minutes and check on them regularly during the night.
- Keep them at home and keep them with you. Babies recover faster in a secure environment and when they feel safe.
- Hold your baby when he/she is not sleeping. The heat can be transferred to your body when you carry your baby.
- Get medical advice to know the cause of the fever while using natural remedies.
Using aromatherapy for treating fevers
- For babies and infant, use Florame organic Camomile flora water OR Lavender flora water.
Spray Camomile/Lavender Flora Water on a wringed cloth, and wrap around ankles, repeat every 30 minutes, monitor temperature in between. You can sponge with these flora water too throughout the day. - For Children over 5 years old, add 3 -6 drops (organic Fine Lavender OR Chamomile Roman essential oil) in a bowl of cold water, soak and wring cloth, and wrap around ankles, repeat every 30 minutes, monitor temperature in between.
The water can get a little cooler, the older the child is. You can also sponge the body down if the child is uncomfortable, repeating every hour (but assuring you towel dry quickly and well in between applications).
It is important to choose certified pure and organic essential oils and flora water for your child.
The above are remedies that I used for my children. Hope the sharing gives you some help in taking care of your child when they have a fever.
