A parent’s way of caring for a baby has changed radically in recent years. Now, more than ever, parents are aware of the psychological needs of a baby which often translates into bodily contact and emotional attention given.
As a parent, a loving touch and bodily contact are great ways to communicate with your baby without words. By gentle body contact and massaging, you can bond with your baby by providing them a sense of support, security and acceptance. Massaging you baby is also a great way to calm them. This is an irreplaceable sense of affection between parent and baby and we reckon you as a parent will enjoy it a lot too!
Organic, unscented, first cold pressed vegetable oils are the best options used for a baby massage.
Did you know that when a baby is first born, he or she would usually be covered in a greasy substance to protect the skin from the sudden change in environment? Fats and oils are part of us and by using oils, you are able to stroke and glide smoothly on your baby’s skin. We strongly recommend to only use unscented, certified organic vegetable oils as they are gentle and does not disrupt your baby’s sense of smell.
Due to the extreme sensitivity of a new born, please refrain from adding any essential oils in the massage oils. Introduction of essential oils at such young age will only burden the baby’s developing organs to metabolize and excrete the essential oils. According to the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians, essential oils should not be used at all on babies even diluted.
Here are some organic vegetable oils that we recommend using as baby massage oils. Please do a patch test before using the oils if your baby has any allergies. You can start by applying the vegetable oil on a small area on the skin and leave it for 24 hours. If your baby does not show any allergic reactions to the oil, you are safe to use the oil as a massage oil.
- Florame organic Calendula macerated oil: film forming, softening and nourishing. Helps irritated skin, diaper rash, cradle cap, itches and bites.
- Florame organic sweet almond oil: film forming, for delicate and sensitive skin, suitable for baby and young skin.
To massage your baby, simply pump one pump of the organic vegetable oil and rub between your palms until they turn warm. Then very gently massage you baby’s body with a clear mind to try to connect with your baby. You may even talk or sing to your baby to create a relaxing and soothing environment. A good massage helps in lymph circulation which helps strengthen the immunity too.
Both calendula and sweet almond oils are also suitable as bath oils. Add 1-2 teaspoon of the selected oil into the warm bath water to bathe your baby.
Taking care of a new born baby can be challenging, but with patience and endurance, it can be a very fulfilling one as you see yourself growing with your baby. So, enjoy this very blessed journey!
